The Quebec rapper Samian hits hard with the release of his new music video Listen, directed by F6 Media and presented by Nikamo Music in collaboration with Passport Discs. A committed piece, filmed in the deeply symbolic settings of Kitcisakik and Pikogan, where it all began for him. On his Facebook page, he writes:
“We filmed where it all began.”
And it shows in every image.
A strong and free voice
Originally from Pikogan, in Abitibi, Samian is of Quebecois and Anishnabe descent. Revealed in 2004 thanks to the project Wapikoni Mobile, he quickly stood out with a unique style, alternating between French andAnishnabe, the language of his nation. Through his texts, he highlights his identity and the realities of First Peoples with strength and sensitivity.
Since then, he has toured the world, worked on a series of projects and released several notable albums, including Facing the music, which earned him a Félix and more recently Savage, released in 2024.
Kitcisakik: more than a place, a memory
The clip Listen was filmed at Kitcisakik, A Native American settlement in Quebec. Unlike a reserve, a settlement does not necessarily have the same legal status but remains an inhabited and recognized land, belonging to an Indigenous community. This choice of location is far from trivial. It represents a return to one's roots, a gesture of recognition towards a territory that shaped the artist.
The music video's visuals demonstrate a deep respect for his culture and community, with a simple yet impactful aesthetic.
An artist with many faces
Beyond music, Samian is a multi-talented creator. He uses other platforms to promote Indigenous cultures and tell stories that are too often overlooked.
On the radio, he hosts Minotan! on ICI Musique (Radio-Canada), a show that highlights the richness of the contemporary indigenous scene.
On television, he hosted On the edge of the world on TV5, a documentary series in which he meets people who live differently, here and elsewhere.
On the fiction side, he plays in productions such as One Way (Crave) and Legendary Knowledge (APTN), a youth project that passes on traditional stories and knowledge through generations.
