"The essentials": Rainmen returns to its roots with Ryzzlah
This historical reminder anchors the project in a collective memory that is often neglected.
With L’essentiel, Rainmen continues a long-term body of work initiated over two decades ago. The duo is joined here by Ryzzlah, over a jazzy production crafted by Nicholas Craven.
The track is taken from Zoe Troubles, an EP designed to mark the 25th anniversary of the historic album Armageddon. Without forced nostalgia or a commemorative stance, Rainmen affirms a sense of continuity. The focus is on transmission, loyalty, and consistency, concepts that have always run through their journey and that take on a particular resonance here.
The music video, directed by Lemme Kno, was filmed at The House of Jazz. The location is far from insignificant. It serves as the setting for a tribute to Doudou Boicel, founder of Rising Sun (Soleil Levant), a central figure in Montreal's cultural life at a time when the city was regularly associated with Harlem of the North. This historical reminder anchors the project in a collective memory that is often neglected.
Of course, a reminder remains necessary, especially in a context where the memory of local Hip-Hop is often fragmented. L’essentiel then acts as a point of reference: certain foundations are still there, solid and active, continuing to nourish today’s culture.
Harlem of the North It's here to stay. Since its emergence, it has been an integral part of Montreal, its history, and its cultural heritage. The local underground rap scene still carries its banner, reminding us that our Hip-Hop culture was also built upon this art form.
"We celebrate birthdays, and we mourn the dead." - Naufrage
Historical fact: The city was a major North American jazz hub, particularly during the 1920s–1930s, with a highly active scene and prestigious clubs, partly linked to Prohibition in the United States.
