Skyz's Manifesto in Go Back
Skyz unveiled his new video clip Back Order (ft. DJ Horg), an energetic music video directed by Robin Cadoret and scripted by Jonathan Michel Pipunic, released on April 16, 2025. This track, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by $.Riz-Allah, highlights the distinctive scratch of DJ Horg, adding an authentic touch to the hip-hop vibe of the track.
With this single, Skyz continues the momentum of its recent releases and affirms its desire to leave its mark in 2025, faithful to its style and personal vision.
After 5 years of absence, the Quebec rapper Skyz (Jonathan Michel Pipunic) returns in force with Go Back (Back to the Future), an introspective title accompanied by a clip directed by Robin Cadoret. The video marks a unprecedented collaboration with the producer Nabo by Hot Box Productions, also coming out of a long hiatus, although he was working on projects with some artists.
The clip, shot like a trip into the past with the DeLorean, integrates performances of Cassandra Emond-Masse (singing), Pierre Doré (guitar), and dancers Coralie Martineau Pipunic and Alicia Dubé from Studio Le Clandestin.
For Skyz, the nostalgic aspect embodied by the DeLorean DMC-12 is crucial in the narration of Go Back (Back to the Future). This iconic vehicle, a symbol of time travel and creative resilience, serves as a visual metaphor for the artist's return after a five-year absence.
The visual universe is enriched by the works of the painter Mylène Mondou, creating an atmosphere halfway between nostalgia and modernity.
Quebec rap, between stylistic diversity and artistic divisions
The local hip-hop scene is fueled by a plurality of styles, flows underground to pop experiments, as evidenced by Skyz and his approach described as "pop-rap". In the image of Koriass, whose commercial roots have sometimes divided the community, these artists reinvent the codes of the genre by mixing accessible melodies and universal themes, paving the way for an increased presence of hip-hop on the radio waves.
Some detractors, instead of welcoming this cultural democratization, blame these MCs for their distance from their roots. hardcore rap. However, collaborations like Turn Your Head Around by Narkoi, Ironic and Dupuis (2010) showed that a balance between melodic hook and authenticity remain possible. Skyz embodies this movement: his latest project Go Back combines retrofuturistic nostalgia (symbolized by the DeLorean DMC-12) and introspective flow, without sacrificing its hip-hop DNA.
The return of Nabo (Hot Box Productions) alongside Skyz evokes a rekindled creative symbiosis. Their collaboration, which dates back to the 2010s, had already produced tracks together. This joint comeback could herald new joint projects after Rap Académie.
Skyz, driven by an unwavering musical passion, is currently working on a new album with no release date announced. The Quebec artist seeks to expand his audience while remaining anchored in his hip-hop roots, notably through iconic collaborations such as the one with Nabo from Hot Box Productions or the famous DJ Horg.
By navigating between nostalgia and modernity, he paves the way for a new generation of artists who seek to expand the boundaries of hip-hop without denying its essence. The next album by Skyz, whatever its release date, promises to be a major musical event for his career, capable of reconciling purists and innovators in the same creative impulse.
