The launch of Iceman, the highly anticipated project of Drake, has just taken an unexpected turn. On September 13, a group of cryptocurrency streamers known as Bagwork, played an unreleased track from the rapper in a car.

Within hours, the footage had set social media ablaze, and what was supposed to remain confidential turned into a major leak. The piece in question wasn't just any old one: it contained some scathing lines aimed directly at DeMar DeRozan, former Toronto Raptors star.

In this excerpt, Drake lets out words heavy with meaning:

“When you were part of the team we used to be planning our Mexico trips in the spring / We must've been dealing in the spur of the moment / Cause why (Kawhi) did we think you could get us a ring?”.

In a few sentences, he recalls the time when DeRozan wore the Raptors jersey, a period in which the franchise never won a title. Everything changed in 2018, when the player was traded to the Spurs for Kawhi LeonardA year later, Leonard led Toronto to its first NBA championship, accomplishing what DeRozan had not been able to realize.

This dig, as subtle as it was sharp, comes in an already tense climate between the two men, especially since DeRozan appeared in the music video Not Like Us and that he joined Kendrick Lamar on stage to dance to this song during The Pop Out.

The matter took on another dimension when Drake, then on tour in Berlin with PARTYNEXTDOOR, himself called live on the livestream of the famous Adin RossVisibly irritated, he blurted out:

“I don’t even know who the f**those kids are. I asked you who they are. What the f***?”*.

His voice tense, he tried to understand how this leak could have happened and why this song was circulating like this. His tone gave a clear idea of his annoyance, he who had already teased the instrumental of this title in Iceman: Episode 2 and who seemed to want to make it a central piece of his next album.

The leak has undermined a carefully orchestrated exit strategy. For several weeks, Drizzy multiplied excerpts and appearances, leaving the mystery surrounding his project. Seeing a song circulate in this way breaks some of the suspense and forces speculation. Some fans wonder if the final version of the album will include this frontal attack on DeRozan or if Drake will decide to leave it aside to avoid fueling the controversy even more.

In the meantime, the 38-year-old artist continues to keep the anticipation alive around Iceman by releasing other singles. The father of one has already shared What Did I Miss?, Which One in collaboration with Central Cee, Somebody Loves Me Pt. 2 with PARTYNEXTDOOR and Cash Cobain, as well as Dog House alongside Julia Wolf and Yeat. But one thing is certain: this leak reminds us that, even after two decades of reign, each release of Drake is scrutinized, commented on and sometimes compromised by leaks that put his team and his plans to the test.
