Who is MC Souffrance?

Souffrance, his real name Sofiane Meridja, is a rapper from Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis), member of the collective L’ uZine. He has established himself as an authentic figure of French rap thanks to his introspective and committed lyrics, mixing social criticism and a quest for meaning.

His artistic journey, marked by profound sincerity, has reached a loyal audience, including in Quebec, where his influence extends.

As a prelude, for those who don't know, the name Souffrance was born from his first name, Sofiane, and a reference to marginalized France ("Under-France"). Nicknamed Souf In his early days, he ended up definitively adopting this evocative pseudonym.

To measure the extent of his talent, it should be remembered that in November 2021, Jul invited him to participate in the project Le Classico Organisé, bringing together 157 artists from the Marseille and Parisian rap scenes. He features on the track We have to go alongside Jul and Keny Arkana, among others.

Suffering's multiple projects

Before the release of his project Your race is heavy. in 2007, Souffrance had already proven itself on the compilation 8 p.m., confirming his unwavering love for rap.

An accountant by profession, he took a musical hiatus between 2011 and 2015 before returning with a vengeance. Since then, he's been releasing projects at a breakneck pace.

Group founded in 2007 by Tony Toxik, Cenza and Souffrance, the collective L’uZine was enriched in 2010 with the arrival of Tonio Le Vakeso, then DJs G High Djo in 2018 and Soul Intellect in 2019. These artists, mainly from Montreuil, each contributed to shaping the group's identity while developing their own solo projects.

As highlighted Tony Toxic, Souffrance has always been omnipresent in all of the group's projects, proving his unwavering commitment to the movement. But it was in 2020 that he really decided to go all out with the collective.

Besides his projects with the group, Souffrance already has 9 solo projects to his credit: C’est du lourd ta race (2007), Le peuple a faim (2015), as well as the maxi Cités d’or and the mixtape Noctambus, both released in 2020. On May 21, 2021, he released his very first album: Tranche de vie.

His other solo projects include the albums Tour de Magie (2022), Eau de Source (2023) and the EP Éléphant (2024).

Not to mention multiple appearances of Souffrance on mixtapes, EPs, albums and numerous projects of the members of L’uZine.

New album: Hiver Automne

On March 14, 2025, Souffrance, with the production of Tony Toxic, released his fourth solo album titled Hiver Automne under the label Hall26 Records.

This opus marks a new stage in his artistic career, with prestigious collaborations such as Soprano, Jewel Usain, Chilly Gonzales and Isha. The album offers a rich musical palette, mixing piano, strings and elegant brass, while remaining faithful to the rapper's raw identity.

Among the flagship titles are Compte Double with Soprano and Barbecue en Hiver with the Canadian Chilly Gonzales.

Interestingly, Soprano's participation came after the freestyle of Souffrance when appearing Soprano has Planète Rap, released on December 10, 2024. Less than a week later, they were already in the studio recording the track Compte Double.

Before the album's release, Souffrance had unveiled several notable pieces:

• Bizon, released on January 10, 2025, was accompanied by an official music video. This title highlights the collaboration with Chilly Gonzales on the piano and Tony Toxik to production.

• Hiver Automne, released on March 7, 2025, gives its name to the album and perfectly illustrates its new musical nuances.
