Synonyms for the word Godfather include mentor, guide, shepherd, show, direct, foster, nurture, and cultivate. It&#039;s hard to imagine a single person embodying this word and descriptions across multiple worlds, but this word accurately defines our friend, confidant, and mentor, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magazinehiphop.com\/en\/tag\/clarence-alexander-avant\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"758\">Clarence Alexander Avant<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Clarence Avant<\/strong> was born in the segregated town of Climax, North Carolina, in 1931, the eldest of eight children. There were few opportunities in Climax for someone like <strong>Clarence<\/strong>, so he dropped out of school at the age of sixteen (16) and moved to New Jersey. After a few odd jobs here and there, <strong>Clarence<\/strong> got the opportunities he hoped for by becoming the manager of the <strong>Teddy P&#039;s Lounge<\/strong> in Newark, New Jersey, and<strong> Joseph Glaser<\/strong>, the long-time manager of <strong>Louis Armstrong<\/strong>. From there, <strong>Mr. Avant<\/strong> began to manage <strong>Little Willie John<\/strong>, a blues artist, the jazz singer <strong>Sarah Vaughn<\/strong>, the pioneer of rock and roll <strong>Tom Wilson<\/strong>, and the pianist-composer <strong>Lalo Schifrin<\/strong> from Argentina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n        <div id=\"player-one-auto-3cT1RlpIbXU-1\"\n             class=\"player-one-wrap player-one-wrap--auto\"\n             data-player-var=\"playerOneData_player_one_auto_3cT1RlpIbXU_1\"\n             style=\"--po-brand: #e50914; aspect-ratio: 16\/9;\"\n        >\n            <div class=\"po-player-container\"><\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        \n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Businessman<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In November 1943, <strong>Clarence<\/strong> based <strong>Consolidated Booking<\/strong> and <strong>Associated Booking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Before<\/strong> first met <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magazinehiphop.com\/en\/tag\/quincy-jones\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"759\">Quincy Jones<\/a><\/strong>, who was the first black man to serve as vice president in a <strong>record company (Mercury)<\/strong>, while managing <strong>Smith<\/strong>. Where other jazz artists were getting 100,000 $, <strong>Before<\/strong> asked for 45,0000 $ for <strong>Smith<\/strong>, and the bold number impressed <strong>Jones<\/strong>. <strong>Before<\/strong> ended up signing <strong>Smith <\/strong>has <strong>Verve Records<\/strong> for a large sum.\u00a0<em>He went and got the deal<\/em>\u00a0&quot;, remembers <strong>Jones<\/strong> later. &quot;\u00a0<em>I respected him for that.\u00a0<\/em>\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was the first of several corporations, such as <strong>Avant Garde Enterprises<\/strong>, which he opened in November 1962, with offices on the West Coast in September 1964. <strong>Clarence<\/strong> moved to Beverly Hills, California, to join<strong> Venture Records<\/strong>, the first joint venture between an African-American record company and a major (<strong>MGM<\/strong>), in 1967.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the closure of <strong>Venture Records<\/strong> by <strong>MGM<\/strong>, <strong>Clarence Avant<\/strong> based <strong>Sussex Records<\/strong> in 1969, where <strong>Bill Withers <\/strong>marks its success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, in 1971, he founded <strong>Avant Garde Broadcasting<\/strong>, which he uses to buy <strong>KAGB-FM<\/strong>, the first African-American FM station in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January 1976, <strong>Clarence<\/strong> spear <strong>Tabu Records<\/strong>, which signs artists like <strong>The SOS Band<\/strong>, <strong>Alexander O&#039;Neal <\/strong>and <strong>Cherrelle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1993, <strong>Clarence<\/strong> is appointed president of <strong>Motown Records<\/strong> and heads the editorial branch of <strong>Avant-Garde Music<\/strong> until its sale to <strong>Universal Music Group<\/strong> in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Advise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The influence of <strong>Clarence Avant<\/strong> has guided and inspired musical artists and executives over the years. He understood the importance of politics and had access to people in the highest offices, whether Democrat or Republican. He served as an advisor to the president <strong>George HW Bush<\/strong>, and he had close ties to and raised funds for former presidents <strong>Jimmy Carter<\/strong>, <strong>Bill Clinton<\/strong> and <strong>Barack Obama<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Community Leader<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Living in New York, <strong>Clarence<\/strong> was a member of the board of directors of the <strong>National Association of Radio Announcers<\/strong> and of the<strong> Apollo Theatre Foundation<\/strong>. In Los Angeles, he served on the board of directors of the <strong>United Way<\/strong>, of <strong>Los Angeles World Affairs Council<\/strong>, of the <strong>Brotherhood Crusade<\/strong> and of the <strong>NAACP<\/strong>. We also had the privilege of having him as a member of the Board of Directors of the <strong>Los Angeles Urban League<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jamie Foxx<\/strong>, <strong>Jimmy Jam Harris<\/strong>, <strong>Terry Lewis<\/strong>, <strong>Quincy Jones<\/strong>s and <strong>Bill Withers<\/strong> unveiled the star of <strong>Clarence Avant<\/strong> on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magazinehiphop.com\/en\/tag\/hollywood-walk-of-fame\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"760\">Hollywood Walk of Fame<\/a><\/strong> in October 2016. He received the <strong>President&#039;s Merit Award<\/strong> as a Grammy icon at the pre-Grammy gala in <strong>Clive Davis<\/strong> in 2018. The <strong>Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/strong> inducted <strong>Clarence Avant<\/strong> in the 2021 class of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magazinehiphop.com\/en\/tag\/rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"421\">Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Clarence<\/strong> was also a family man. He and his wife, <strong>Jacqueline<\/strong> &quot;\u00a0<strong>Jackie<\/strong>&quot;, were together for 54 years until his untimely death during a home burglary in 2021. They are survived by their two (2) adult children, Nicole and Alexander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world has lost another incredible man. Our family has also lost a friend, confidant, and mentor. His contributions changed lives for generations.
