Chuck Ice (Charles Richard Husbands) is a key figure in Canadian hip-hop. A platinum-certified songwriter, battle rap champion and veteran artist, he has over 40 years of experience. His career spans from freestyle mics to management positions in the international music industry, including on stage, in the studio and in master classes.
A beginning marked by the fire of battles
By the mid-1980s, Chuck Ice established himself as a formidable battle rapper. His name, originating in his Lasalle neighborhood, quickly spread throughout southwest Montreal : Lachine, Ville-Emard, Verdun, Little Burgundy, Uptown, NDG and Côte-des-Neiges. By the early 1990s, he was already recognized as a standard-bearer for Montreal rap.
During this period, he dominated freestyle competitions at the legendary Thunder Dome, racking up 15 consecutive victories. At a time when everything was done through pure improvisation, Chuck Ice was never defeated. This reign helped solidify his status as a pioneer of Canadian battle rap, a discipline of which he remains one of the greatest exponents.

Zero Tolerance : the musical legacy
It was also in the early 1990s that he joined forces with D-Trace and DJ/producer DJ Choice to found the legendary group Zero Tolerance. In 1992, they released their only LP, Dark Side of the Groove. Today, this album is considered a piece of history, worthy of a museum display. Sought after by collectors across the country, this project marked the maturity of Montreal rap, placing it on an equal footing with the American and international scenes.
Trials and resilience
Chuck Ice's career was stalled after legal troubles, but far from shying away from his past, he speaks openly about it in conferences and interviews. His journey, fraught with obstacles, makes him an example of resilience and perseverance for the next generation.
Beyond his work as an artist, Chuck Ice has established himself as a builder. His career includes :
- numerous television appearances
- documentaries, seminars, and master classes
- more than 50 shows, four tours, and several festivals
- more than 25 music licenses for television and film

He is also a platinum-certified songwriter for his work with Dubmatique, a leading Quebec rap group.
Over time, Chuck has taken on an international dimension. In 2016, he joined The AMAG Collective, founded by the kings of hip-hop Redd Eyezz and AM Sharma, which represent Birdman and Cash Money Records. He quickly rose through the ranks and is now president of business operations in Canada.
On a daily basis, Charles is responsible for production, staff management, business development strategies, while overseeing a team of producers, songwriters, beatmakers, and talent scouts. His leadership allows AM and Redd Eyezz to focus on major international contracts, partnerships that have included prestigious names such as DJ Khaled, Kodak Black, London On Da Track and others.
A key figure for the next generation
Chuck Ice is not only a pioneer : he is a mentor and a role model. A graduate of Dawson College, he has transformed his experiences into life lessons and tools to guide the next generation. From BC to Newfoundland, his name is respected as one of the great builders of Canadian rap.
Today, he fully embraces his role as the godfather of Canadian rap. He actively recruits new talent and remains a central figure for anyone looking to break into the music industry.
The public will have the opportunity to meet him on September 29th at CIBL 101,5 FM, during the grand finale of DRD – Dernier Rappeur Debout, presented by the show On s’en Rap.
